Today many people own dogs and their dogs are a part of their family.  They would not consider going somewhere else without their beloved pet.  While this is certainly commendable especially when one considers the number of abused, neglected and abandoned pets out there, there are nevertheless certain things that you need to be sure you have taken into consideration.

One of the items you will need to buy is a dog carrier, also known as a dog crate or dog cage.  There are numerous different styles and designs available on the market today but many have been designed to look good while not being very practical or suitable for the dog.  Be sure that when you make your selection that you choose a dog carrier for the right reasons.  Of course the main thing you need to look for is comfort for the animal concerned.  Chances are they will be spending an extended period of time in the carrier and you therefore want to ensure that it is comfortable for them and obviously this means that it must be the right size, such as dog carriers for small dogs.

Choosing a dog carrier that is too small will make the journey and experience very unpleasant for your dog and future travels will be all the more difficult because the dog will not want to go into the carrier.  Ideally the carrier you choose should be large enough to allow your dog the opportunity to stand up and turn around.  It is important to remember that just like a carrier that is too small is inappropriate, so is a carrier that is too large.  For example if you own a Chihuahua using a carrier designed for dogs like Labradors would not be wise.  This is primarily because the dog could get injured in a carrier too big, especially if you are traveling by airplane.  The handlers at the airport are not always careful about how they handle the animal crates and carriers so it is best to minimize the opportunity for injury and trauma by choosing the right size carrier.

The dog carriers you choose needs to be well made and of a material that will not enable your dog to chew through it.  It is advisable that there be openings in the sides to allow the dog to be able to see outside the carrier.  Some dogs can become more agitated if they are unable or prevented from seeing their surroundings.  If you put yourself in your dog’s position it is understandable.  After-all to the dog the whole experience is very unnerving and traumatic so pet owners have the responsibility of minimizing this as much as they are able to.

Bear in mind that the carrier could well become soiled during the journey and so you should choose one that is made either from plastic or metal.  Both will be easier to clean which is very important if you expect to have limited time with the animal during the journey.  While on the subject of keeping dog carriers for large dogs clean this is another important factor that influences the comfort of the dog.  Chances are their blankets and toys, if you include a favored play thing which is advisable if your dog has any, will also become soiled.  Make sure that you have extra blankets and toys on hand so that you can ensure your dog has the comfort that is needed to make the trip as peaceful and stress-free as possible.
