Going for a stroll through a park or neighborhood with your dog is a very enjoyable thing that many dog owners love to do.  Nowadays many municipalities require that the dog be kept on a leash and so when you get your dog having a good quality dog leash is a must.  If you are new to the world of dogs and dog supplies you might find that you do not know what type of dog leashes are good and which should be avoided.  There are many different ones available including eco-friendly dog leashes on the market today and you need to know how to choose the right one.

Training Leashes – These are designed for training purposes but the truth of the matter is that any standard dog leash is perfect for training the dog to learn to come.  Whenever you train your dog it is important that you do not scare or frighten the animal as this will make the whole process far more traumatic and stressful.  Also, do not let the training sessions go on for too long.  Twenty to thirty minutes should be the maximum time you spend on each session.

The Standard Leash – The huge variety of standard leashes available today making choosing one of these purely about personal preferences.  They are great for training purposes as mentioned above and comply with most municipal laws regarding length.  You can find leather dog leashes or nylon dog leashes they are sturdy and long-lasting.  Some come with reflective strips on them which is very beneficial if you walk your dog in the evening or early hours of the morning when visibility is limited.

The Retractable Leash – These can be very handy depending upon where you are walking the dog.  If in a large open area they allow the dog greater freedom of movement and can be retracted when necessary.  Generally these types of retractable dog leashes are better suited to the smaller breeds of dogs.

Bicycle Leashes – These dog leashes are designed for people who want their dog to join them when they go riding.  While this is a great way to ensure that the dog is not lost or left behind somewhere and also that they are getting exercise, it is important to bear in mind that you do now want to over-exercise the dog.  Many breeds are prone to various skeletal issues that can be exacerbated with over-stimulation.  In short never push the dog past his limits and let him determine what those limits are.  When using leashes like this it is necessary to err on the side of caution.

Multi-Leashes – Again these types of leashes are suitable for small-to-medium sized dogs and allow you to walk more than one dog at a time.  They are not advisable for dogs who are not fully leash trained however as you can end up with nothing more than being part of a tangled mess.

Whatever dog leashes you choose to buy try to choose ones that will suit your needs while also satisfying the municipal laws.  You do not want to choose a leash that makes life difficult for either you or your dog.
